He was co-founder of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO), in 1962. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs (1975-1986), during the presidency of Samora Machel. He became President of Republic, in 1986, after Machel’s death. In 1992, he signed a peace agreement with the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), putting an end to sixteen years of civil war in the country. In 1994, he was elected President of Republic, and the same happened in the 1999 elections.
