Mozambique: National literacy rate up to 48 percent, official study reveals

Mozambique`s literacy rate increased from 39 percent to 48 percent between 1997 and 2003, a Maputo official has announced.

The statistics, compiled from a nationwide study of nearly 9,000 families, were presented at the weekend in the second city of Beira by Fátima Zacarias of the National Institute of Statistics. The highest rates of illiteracy in Mozambique are in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, with the lowest rates to be found in the capital, Maputo, Zacarias noted.
